Earlier this year, Transformco purchased the assets of Sears Holing Corporation, announcing that it would be closing 96 Kmart and Sears stores nationwide, including several in New York State.
Among the stores being closed is the Kmart location on Sunrise Highway in Bohemia, which will cost approximately 78 employees their jobs. When it closes, there will only be one Kmart location left on Long Island, on Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton.
The Bohemia location, as well as stores in Buffalo and Sidney, are scheduled to close on Feb. 16 next year. Seven Long Island stores have closed since April last year, including Sears stores in Hicksville, New Hyde Park and Garden City, and Kmarts in Farmingville, West Babylon, Riverhead and Huntington.
"Since purchasing substantially all the assets of Sears Holdings Corporation in February 2019, Transformco has faced a difficult retail environment and other challenges," the company wrote in a statement.
"We have been working hard to position Transformco for success by focusing on our competitive strengths and pruning operations that have struggled due to increased competition and other factors. To support these initiatives, our owners (along with a third-party investor) have recently provided the company approximately $250 million in new capital."
